Piano in Video Games

13 Jun 2025

These days, the use of pianos in video game soundtracks is not only emotional but also an artistic signature. It helps define some of those iconic, amazing moments that are unforgettable. There are a variety of piano sounds for games like gentle melodies, haunting harmonies, and dramatic crescendos. All these from the piano offer a depth for expression to improve the gameplay and storytelling. There are synthesized and orchestral music, common in game soundtracks, it’s the piano that offers the raw and emotional human touch. So, today, talking about this aspect, we will tell you about the use of the piano in video games’ iconic soundtracks and their composers.

1.   The Emotional Weight of Piano in Gaming

Piano music has something very personal and emotional about it. Unlike a full orchestra, which can overwhelm with a grandiose performance, the piano offers a whisper, a sigh, or even a shout. This emotional range is what makes it a perfect instrument for video games’ soundtracks. Developers often look for solo piano pieces to portray emotions of sadness, hope, and personal growth of the character. A single note or a soft arpeggio in a quiet moment of your gameplay is a signal that something meaningful is about to happen.

2.   Nobuo Uematsu and Final Fantasy

The most iconic use of the piano in gaming is from the Final Fantasy series. Nobuo Uematsu, the composer, is a legend of the video gaming world. He wrote piano themes that resonate with generations of video game players. The track ‘’To Zanarkad’’ for Final Fantasy X is the best example. It has a melancholic effect with a hint of longing. Nobuo uses the space between notes to let the emotions sink in, to let the player time to process the story and their feeling.

3.   Yoko Shimomura and the Kingdom Hearts Series

Another great composer for video game soundtracks is Yoko Shimomura. He is best known for his work on the game ‘’Kingdom Hearts’’. The main theme, ‘’Dearly Beloved’’ of the Kingdom Hearts franchise starts with a gentle piano line that offers both dream-like and nostalgic feelings. This has become one of the most well-known video game piano music pieces ever written. Shimomura uses the changing keys and tempos to give the music a magical flow – you get to explore the boundary of light & darkness.

4.   Undertale and Toby Fox’s Minimalist Piano Style

The creator of Undertale, Toby Fox, took a different approach. He uses simple lo-fi piano motifs to create themes that have emotional complexity despite being simple. The best examples of this are ‘’Undertale’’ and ‘’His Theme’’ – they express the healing and heartbreak without the need for orchestral music. Fox programmed, composed, and arranged this entire soundtrack all by himself. He made use of subtle shifts and repetition in the pieces to match the themes like empathy, consequence, and choice.

5.   Austin Wintory and Journey’s Meditative Scoring

Austin Wintory, in the game ‘’Journey’’, made a soundtrack that matches perfectly with the game’s aesthetics. The full score used a variety of instruments, and the piano stands out among them. Wintory didn’t use the piano as the centerpiece; instead, as a thread that connects emotional beats of the game. The simple appeal of the piano lies in the silence of the desert, the quiet moments between one chapter & the next, and the wonder of explorations. His musical work even got a nomination for a Grammy.

6.   Celeste and Lena Raine’s Expressive Modern Sound

The soundtrack ‘’Celeste’’ by Lena Raine is another great example of piano music that drives the game. Her score has electronic textures, but the piano remains a key piece. The game itself is about challenging the feeling of inner anxiety, which the piano music mirrors with full emotional context. Tracks like Exhale and Resurrections guide players with piano music in moments of relief and frustration. She often layers her piano compositions with synths, but the piano is the real heart of the game’s soundtracks.

7.   The Enduring Popularity of Piano Covers and Concerts

Due to the presence of piano music in video game soundtracks, many gaming fans have started performing these themes too. Nowadays, YouTube is filled with covers of piano music from these game soundtracks. Some are true to the original, while others are in a new style. There is a subgenre of albums and live concerts just for video game piano music. There are events held like Distant World and Video Games Live – their complexity and emotional power make them stand toe-to-toe with film and classical music. Many of the games now release sheet music or piano compositions alongside their soundtracks.

Conclusion: A Piano's Power in Pixels

The piano is indeed a traditional instrument but it has its place in the video games. Piano tells stories of epic fantasies and indie masterpieces for highlight emotions, and bringing players closers to the worlds they love. Behind every musical note is a composer who understand the power of simplicity and complexity. Games continue to evolve as a real art form and the piano has its place set as a timeless voice in it.
