The Ultimate Digital Piano Buying Guide - Yamaha, Roland, Kawai, Casio

30 Mar 2025

The best digital piano manufacturers are all about function—carefully quality-controlled technological brilliance encased in a design that has seen many revisions and refinements over the years. When you buy a digital piano there are some guidelines you should follow. Read this article to get more about Yamaha, Roland, Kawai, and Casio digital pianos.

Pick a reputable brand.

Beware of cheaper brands that could tempt you with their pricing. They usually cost more in the long run, have poor sound quality, and break easily. Instead, you can get a tested and dependable product from a reputable brand. Roland, Yamaha, Korg, Casio, and Kawai are trustworthy brands. Yamaha has perfect sound modeling, and Kawai has figured out how to make an incredibly realistic action on a digital piano. Casio has the most reliable electronics on their digital pianos. One of the most well-known names in the industry is undoubtedly Roland. Given their wide selection of products, this is no minor accomplishment because just hearing their name incites confidence in the sound and construction of a digital piano.

The number of keys: 88

There must be precisely 88 keys—neither more nor fewer. Owning an instrument with comparable proportions is necessary to practice frequently and advance. It's crucial to start with a full 88-key piano. Any keyboard with fewer than 88 keys tends to adjust the standard spacing between piano keys. Significant headaches will result from even minor adjustments. If you practice on a subpar home piano, becoming used to playing on a real piano will be challenging. A learner must have the chance to experiment with the various octaves on a regular piano. All students are given instructions to use the entire keyboard right away.

Touch Sensitivity

The most frequently disregarded component is touching sensitivity. Weighted keys are another name for this. When using a weighted or semi-weighted keyboard, a student can press the keys lightly for a soft sound or firmly for a loud sound. In addition, players will press the key at different speeds without changing the volume if the keys are not weighted. Since dynamics are essential for expressive playing, all teachers start teaching them initially. Unfortunately, most players do not see keyboards without weighted or semi-weighted keys as "real instruments."

Pedals

Pedals are typically included with digital pianos, but not all are created equally! The sustain pedal, which extends the sound of a note when pressed, is the most significant. Una Corda, the left pedal of a piano, is typically used for softer parts because it quietens the instrument. 'A bonus' is the middle pedal. It is in no way necessary, and it shouldn't influence your decision. Below, we expand a little on pedals.

Yamaha Digital Pianos

Without Yamaha, there is no discussion about the finest digital piano manufacturers in the world. Digital pianos by Yamaha are the most popular, the oldest, and have the most extensive and varied range available. Their first organ, built by Torakusu Yamaha himself, dates back to 1887. The piano-like graded hammer action, which is featured in all of their digital pianos, albeit at varying levels of quality, is key to this. With its background in music technology, Yamaha also provides superb stages and home portable pianos. Their top-rated tiny P series models begin at $400, while models with additional functionality and higher realism are available up the price range.

Roland Digital Pianos

Roland's ageless nature originates from their massive legion of classic instruments, most of which can still be heard in hit songs today. They have attempted to storm into the digital piano industry with their RD-series, banking on innovation and experience to create a foothold. They've achieved this after nearly 30 years of supremacy. Many modern features, such as pressure sensitivity, MIDI, and modeling, were pioneered by Roland in their early years.

Kawai Digital Pianos

Kawai pianos have a rich tone quality, elegant cabinets, and improved action response, making them ideal for pianists in instruction or playing for enjoyment. They deliver the highest quality as well as exceptional value for money.

Because there are many pianos, look for stage-ready digital pianos. Then look for the ability to search by topics such as the number of keys and sound series, MIDI/USB connections, and whether or not these digital pianos have built-in speakers.

Casio Digital Pianos

Casio makes several series, including Celviano for players and Privia for portable and stage pianos. Hybrid pianos, the "Celviano." The Privia series includes both stand-alone keyboards and portable player pianos. It's in the middle. The flagship instrument in this series is Casio's PX-860 digital piano. The PX-870 is currently replacing it. It is small yet has a full piano keyboard with textured ivory keys. It is powerful and has deep tones thanks to its 256 polyphonic voices and 2 x 20 watts.
