Why You Need to Choose Piano for Song Writing

30 Mar 2025

When you listen to a song, the lyrics, and music are essentially what you hear. (The instruments and melodies). You don't hear how much effort goes into developing each song's intelligent rhymes, literary devices, visuals, and song structure. Any music can check those boxes, but what makes a song stand out?

An excellent song features a seamless integration of the music and lyrics. The music will fill the silences between lines and support and preserve the text’s emotional aim. Over a song, we've all shed a few excellent tears.

What about that music satisfied you, in your opinion? Was the nostalgic melody emanating from the piano's higher register that accompanied the perfectly placed lyrics that moved you to tears? These songs are typically so masterfully composed that the music and the lyrics play major roles in the game.

To become proficient in songwriting, you must be a proficient pianist or know how to play the piano. The fact that there is always more to learn about this is what I find most interesting. There are constantly additional grooves available for selection or self-creation. You can create a familiar or unusual song if you know about piano playing. You may start and build on your tunes as you improve and gain more knowledge.

The piano offers countless creative opportunities.

Although all instruments are to some extent affected by technical restrictions on fingering, note range, and polyphony extent, the piano may be the least affected. On the piano, for instance, it is considerably simpler to perform the movement up or down the scale than, say, on a guitar, making it much easier to convey a sense of movement in an evolving tune. Additionally, it enables the pianist to create tunes with a more comprehensive dynamic range, which is intrinsically more captivating.

You can choose new and more fascinating options by hearing your melody in relation to a chord. For example, when sung over a C chord instead of an A minor or a G chord, the middle note "C" has an entirely different quality.

Piano melodies are more catchy.

You can always utilize a piano to create vocal melodies, regardless of the genre. First, because you can play the rhythm and the melody simultaneously on a keyboard, which only a few other instruments enable you to do, it is simpler to obtain rapid feedback on the melody in relation to the background chords and other parts of the song.

Melodies written down from a keyboard-based instrument are typically far catchier and likelier to linger in the listener's mind than merely hummed tunes. While most musicians can

Play over an octave range; playing piano scales can be done without lifting a finger, no pun intended, making it much simpler to create an evolving melody with a sense of movement on a keyboard. This is because you must slide your whole hand several inches to get a significant pitch change out of a guitar.

On the piano, learning music theory is simpler.

The piano keyboard's layout is simple to learn since it is intuitive. On the keyboard, the higher the note is when you move further to the right, and the lower when you move farther to the left. As a result, the piano is the ideal instrument for studying music theory. This is why learning piano on the side will be encouraged if you take your instrument seriously. Most great composers are pianists, including Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Porter, Bacharach, and Billy Joel.

It is simple on the piano to play chords and melodies at once.

Although members of the guitar and lute families can also play melodies and chords, they are constrained in a way that the piano is not. On the piano, you can play a melody anywhere with your right hand while concurrently playing chords with your left hand.

A piano is also one of the few instruments simultaneously playing two melodies. You can use either hand, moving in the same or opposite directions, to create simple two and three-note musical hooks (think dah-dah-dah-dum) or complicated, complex melodies.

Ultimately, every instrument can produce a decent song, and any great songwriter would still produce wonderful songs with any instrument. But the piano should be your instrument of choice if you aim to write complex, catchy tunes or intriguing chord progressions.

The piano is the ideal location to begin when setting down the basic chords and vocal melody because it provides the song's foundation, even for a pumping metal song. When you start writing using a keyboard-based instrument for the first time, you could be startled by the change in your melodic quality. And even if you plan to leave it out of each new song you write, I recommend that every songwriter pick up some basic piano skills.
