Expert Tips on Valuating a Piano

30 Mar 2025

One of the most crucial steps in selling or purchasing a piano is valuation. Given the multitude of factors that influence its worth, determining the accurate market value of a piano can be complex. But awareness of such factors and knowledge in that line can ease the valuation job and make it more accurate.

Read on for various tips on correctly evaluating a piano, whether you are selling or buying this valuable asset.

Assess the Brand and Model

The piano’s brand and model are critical determinants in assessing its value. Brands such as Steinway, Yamaha, and Kawai mostly retain their value in the market over a long period due to their quality and market requirements. Research the brand and specific model of the piano to understand its initial market positioning. High-end models typically retain their value better than entry-level ones.

Determine the Age

The age of a piano influences its value considerably. A general rule of thumb is that older pianos tend to depreciate in value unless they are antiques or have been meticulously maintained and restored. You can usually date a piano by locating its serial number and consulting the manufacturer’s records. However, remember that vintage or antique pianos that have been well-kept or restored can fetch higher prices due to their historical and musical significance.

Evaluate the Condition

The characteristics of the physical and mechanical aspects of the piano are the most important factors in the valuation of the piano. Examine the item for signs of coshes such as scratches, dents, and faded spots. Check all the keys, pedals, strings, and soundboard for signs of wear and tear. Having an expert professional piano technician perform their analysis on the current state of the instrument will be sufficient in painting a clear picture regarding the extent of repairs or restoration work on this particular instrument that may, in a way, affect its value.

Consider the Size and Type

The size and type of the piano also come into consideration when the value of the piano is being estimated. Grand pianos typically retain their value over the years better than upright pianos since grand ones are known to have better sound quality and looks. There are different sizes of grand piano, and the size also affects the price of the grand piano; the bigger the grand piano, the higher the price it attracts. Upright pianos, as compared to grand or concert pianos, are only 55 to 61 inches in height and are better fitted for more compact areas, which is, in fact, one of their drawbacks, together with poor sound production, which drastically diminishes the market value of upright pianos.

Examine Market Trends

The piano market is subject to fluctuations and trends like any other market. Demand for specific brands, models, or types of pianos can change, influencing their market value. Explore current market trends, including which pianos are in demand and how similar models are priced. This research can provide a benchmark for valuing a specific piano and help identify a fair market price.

History and Provenance

Getting a piano with a rich backstory or an illustrious lineage, including association with famous artists or specific performances, can also help boost its worth. Papers documenting the piano's history, together with its previous owners, also increase its aesthetic value and the price at which it will be sold.

Consider Its Tone and Playability

While more challenging to quantify, a piano's tone, sound quality, and playability affect its desirability and value. Pianists often seek instruments with a rich, whole tone and responsive action. Have a skilled pianist test the instrument to evaluate these aspects. A piano that sounds great and enjoyable to play will likely be valuable.

Several factors have to be taken into account when valuing a piano, including age and general condition, as well as the brand, model, and market trends. These are a few tips every seller or buyer, be it for the piano, should employ to determine the most accurate value of a piano. However, sometimes, even the most experienced owners and dealers face uncertainty, and it is best to seek help from a professional piano technician or an appraiser for the correct valuation.
